I'm learning Chinese said Wernher von Braun

Coming home from Carrefour today, I was giving the taxi driver directions and on arrival at the flat he gave me a big smile and told me that my Chinese is very good. I can't tell you how chuffed I was. I haven't learnt a lot but I'd like to think that what I have learnt I'm saying correctly. Pronunciation is really hard and very important in a tonal language like Chinese, so I was really please when the taxi driver told me my Chinese is good. James and I haven't been taking lessons sadly but we're picking things up as we go along. Two of James' students are teaching him some words and I'm picking things up when I'm out and about shopping etc. 

 What have I learnt so far and more importantly what am I confident saying:

 Hello - Nǐ hǎo
Goodbye - Zàijiàn
Thank you - Xièxiè ni
Yes, thank you - Shì de, xièxiè nǐ
No, thank you - Bù liǎo xièxiè  nǐ
Turn right - Yòu zhuǎn
Turn left - Zuǒ zhuǎn
Zhongshan north road - Zhōngshān běi lù
Tianmu West Road - Tiānmù xi lù
Jaclyn Villas - Jiǎkèlín

 Ok so most of it is directions for travelling in a taxi but it's very useful! The next thing to learn - numbers!

Day 3

  Not a huge amount to report from the last two days. We’ve been pottering about the house getting things sorted. Lots of old crockery in the kitchen to be removed and boxed up. Lots of cleaning to be done as well. My old nemesis, the ants, have found us, so a good clean of the kitchen and living room floors is due today, then we can lay down some traps and hopefully that will deal with most of them.  The house is really lovely and big, but the last tenants didn’t treat the paint work very well. We’re going to speak to the landlady today to find out if we can get some paint and touch up the areas that need it. A good quarantine activity, and might provide us with some exercise as well. First week

I can't believe it's only been a week since I last posted. This first week at work has felt like a month! My work timetable has changed about 10 times and I'm now working 4 days a week instead of 3. Suits me as the extra money will come in handy but by the time Friday came round I was totally exhausted.  I'm supporting mostly Maths and Science, which is fun, but I do feel slightly out of my element. My week is split in to in class support and one to one support with a student who is behind his peer group. It's very challenging work and takes a lot out of me but I think I'm really going to enjoy it.  The school is really nice and my colleagues have made me feel really welcome. Memories

I've been thinking about my dad a lot lately. Since he died that's been a very hard thing to do. Even now I find it almost impossible to do so without crying.  While dad was in hospital, he was visited regularly by various members of the clergy. In his last days, I think that he must have been visted by a member of the Catholic ministry because among his things that we took home was a rosary. I don't know why I kept it. I'm not Catholic. I just can't seem to part with it. It's always in my bag and goes with me wherever I go. It's crazy really. It seems to have become some sort of talisman to me. I panic at the thought of losing it. Maybe there's something symbolic in that, I don't know.  All I know is that my dad is gone, and I've lost the most important man in my life.
